The aesthetic experience, on the other hand, is a will-less perception. Sciences deal with the “phenomenon, its laws, connections, and the relations which result from them.” This type of knowledge seeks to understand the world as representation. Schopenhauer believed that science is superior to the empirical nature of everyday cognition, because it is not colored by the wills and whims of the individual. Science operates within the principle of sufficient reason (everything has an reason/explanation for why it is), and it is through this branch of knowledge that we humans condition our perception of the world. For this post, I wanted to outline the concepts in the former text, especially those ideas that revolve around the value of Art and beauty. After a bit of rooting around, I discovered some truly fascinating works called Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung (“ The World as Will and Representation”, 1818/1819, vol 2 1844), and Über das Sehn und die Farben (“ On Vision and Colors”, 1816). I felt that lovely, inexplicable pull of a kindred spirit, and thus began my pursuit of Schopenhauer texts. Like if you drop a pebble into a hole, and its resounding splash bubbles up from the darkness into a chorus of sound it is then that you realize you’ve come across a rather deep well, something more profound than a dry, abandoned tunnel of air. I ran into a quote by this German philosopher (22 February 1788 – 21 September 1860) last week, and his words echoed. Perhaps I have bitten off more than I can chew.

Not merely in psychological ways, as faith in an attractive afterlife can do, but in terms of concrete, worldly benefits. What is almost always missed is that Christianity often puts the pie on the table! It makes life better here and now. Atheists like to ridicule this aspect of faith as “pie in the sky.” The central idea is, of course, that Christian faith offers a sedative for suffering in this life by promising that we will be fully compensated in the next, when “many that are first will be last, and the last first” (Mat. But in the case of Christianity, history shows that rich and poor alike turned to Christianity “in response to the widespread need to be comforted for the miseries of life-not merely poverty, but disease, the deaths of loved ones, and all the other misfortunes and disappointments humans face.” “Misery and Mercy” is the title of the chapter where Rodney Stark confronts the accusation by atheists that Christianity caters to the weak and suffering by promising “pie in the sky.” Yes, he says, it is most often the affluent who start new religions. Rather, as I had with my other novels, I took the true events and modified them to make the story as interesting as possible. Now, when I say that in some ways, this story parallels that of the relationship between my wife and I, I don’t mean to imply that everything that happened in the story happened in real life. Hence, the names of the major characters became Paul and Adrienne, and of course, because they were my in-laws, I wanted to write the type of story that they would not only enjoy, but that would not offend them as well. “No,” I said, “I don’t,” and she quickly responded, “Paul and I would like our names in one of your books.” That year, when my mother-in-law was visiting, she came up to me and asked if I knew what she wanted for Christmas. Unlike most of my novels, Nights in Rodanthe was not inspired by specific people in my life, other than the names of the two lead characters. If you want to read Roth’s own response to the allegations of racism, you can do so here. After having read both books and being confronted with even more statements about the books being “problematic”, I decided to give my own opinion about it. I was upset, because I loved the book and the criticism didn’t make sense. I was confronted with allegations that the novel is racist and ableist that it appropriates marginalised cultures and people suffering from chronic pain. Afterwards, I read some reviews – and I was shocked. I loved it, and finished the book in a few days.
